X-linked hypophosphatemia or XLH is caused by a mutation of the PHEX gene causing the kidney to waster phosphate. This in turn, leads to low levels of blood phosphate affecting the normal mineralisation of bones and teeth. Challenges behin in childhood when growth occurs and persist and often increase through adulthood.
